Too many of us are afraid to want what we want. Someone asks us what we want out of life and we stumble and say, “Gee, I don’t know… ” As if wanting to better your life or change your circumstances is wrong. It isn’t selfish to live up to your potential or to be who you are called to be. THAT is precisely why you are on the planet! We all benefit when you use those wonderful skills you were given to make the world better because you were born.
Here are 3 tips to get past your blocks:
1. Learn two new things every year and one of them should scare you a little.
I was given that advice in college by the Dean of our School. We were in the communications department and I saw him one day coming out of a class in the Agriculture Building. I asked him what he was doing and he said, “Oh, I’m taking a class on soils. I’m starting a garden and since I’m a Dean, the classes are free. So why not?” Then he left me with that pithy quote, “Beth, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! Learn two new things every year and one should scare you a little. If you do, your life will be rich with experiences and you will die a fulfilled woman!”
2. Be Good to people. You don’t know who they are, who they know, or who they might become!
When I moved to Hawaii in the early 1970’s, a neighbor told me to be careful how I treated people there, because everyone was related. It was advice that served me well. I turned that advice into a memorable mantra that has helped me create a powerful international network. This is a fuzzy picture, but I even got to meet one of my favorite authors, Alvin Toffler, because of my connections.
Now that I’m making yet another shift in my career path, I’m delighted to see how many people are willing to help me make this new move. Some in my network have grown in influence and stature. My new career path is being assisted by people I helped decades ago, and they never forgot it.
3. Take the Leap! If not now, WHEN?
Many people are afraid to try because they don’t know how it will turn out. Newsflash: None of us know how TODAY will turn out, even if we stay home and do nothing! I think of that when I read about a random airplane landing on the roof of a house, or a car ramming into someone’s living room. There’s no such thing as “playing it safe.” Life turns on a dime. Give yourself permission to want what you want. Make a vision board (pictures and words of your dream life, dream job, or dream vacation.) Tell friends what you want. Ask for help. Be willing to take a risk. You ain’t getting off the planet alive! And how long do you think you’ve got? Start doing something towards your dream today! It’s OK to have a Plan B, but get started even if you don’t know how it will turn out! Because you never do.
I started my new company in 1989 in Hawaii. I wanted to travel throughout the Pacific Rim, so I named it Pacific Rim Seminars. When that name was publicized in the Business Journal, the Executive Director of the Pacific Rim Foundation saw it and called me. In the course of our conversation, she invited me to be a part of the Foundation. I accepted. Then she asked, since I was a part of the Foundation, would I be willing to travel to the Pacific Asian Congress on Municipalities as their representative? They would pay airfare and conference fees if I would pick up my own hotel. I said, “YES!” I wound up going to Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. I met delegates from all over the Pacific Rim. The Lord Mayor of Kuala Lumpur picked up my hotel charges, and I got the trip for free! Not only that, because of who I met, I began giving seminars in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Years later, that Executive Director was Matron of Honor at my wedding. And a few months ago I did a training program in Honolulu for her sister, a former delegate to the UN.
We are the sum total of our choices. Every choice you make affects only ONE person 100% – that person is you. Make healthy choices that serve you. Take healthy chances that will move you forward and help you grow. Want what you want! You have permission to be who you are called to be. Life is too precious to spend it playing angry birds all alone on your couch!
Get out there and use those God-Given skills and talents!
