“Twitterize” Your Content

February 8, 2010

YouTube and Twitter have irrevocably changed the way we look at the world and gather information. We were already teetering on zero attention span, and…

oooh… a shiny object….

where was I … Yes – a short attention span. I just discovered mine is 1 minute 45 seconds. I was watching a very very cool Blue Angels video in HD. I Love those guys. Love Love Love. It’s a 4:50 minute video. At 1:45 I was ready for the next one. 1:45 — that’s about the equivalent of a Tweet – 140 characters. The equivalent of a 200 word blog. The time it takes me to make a cup of tea in the microwave because boiling water takes too long.

I’m a speaker. Time to rethink all programs. All webinars. All handouts. All marketing materials.

Follow Me!

Goals:

  • Make each sentence pithier (is that a word?)
  • Reduce fluff
  • Catch and retain interest – for at least 1:45
  • Incorporate a ReTweet Idea to support info & other users
  • Front load video and audio content to get the best out there first
  • Create downloads, e-books, & books with short chapters and paragraphs.

What else can we do to appeal to this short-attention-span world? Ideas? Let me know!

Thanks,

Beth

Well Beth, true to form I can only say LOL :-D
Perhaps it’s a case of adapt or die!

In any case, I agree with your article — the more content there is out there, the more you have to ensure you grab people quickly, so this is the way to go. Apparently book sales have continue to go up the last few years so maybe it’s a matter of ‘which brain’ you have switched on at which time…

I watched the Blue Angel video too… and this is my third attempt to come back here with a reply…
so after bed bugs, blue angels and a trip to the post office – my mug of water takes a minute longer btw Beth, your tea cup must be extra small….
…I can report my attention span is longer, but variable – and has more to do with content than exposure. Multiple threads/themes allow you to create interest – think melodies in music.
My favourite piece is the Star Trek: Enterprise opening sequence – multiple layers and just the right amount of exposure for each frame make it just short of information overload for me… (and it is 1.22)

Oh dear… What is the world coming to! I’m on Twitter, FB et al and I fear we are dumbing down at a seriously worrying rate, don’t you?

Hi Hal – Unfortunately, you are right… or should I say U R rite… Our kids don’t know how to spell, use grammar correctly, or put a decent sentence together. It’s not just about dumbing down, it’s also about making our short attention spans even shorter!! AND multi-tasking. How many times have you been on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and email simultaneously. The real question is – Is anyone getting any real work done out there? LOL

Also – because of texting and twitter, you know what BTW, LOL, FYI, LMAO, FWIW, OTOH, IMHO and a host of other letters mean. That used to be the province of our kid’s lives and now adults inhabit that world.

Ah well. What can we do?
      Beth
