Give Yourself Permission

January 6, 2010

Stop second guessing yourself. Give yourself permission to want what you want. Get out of your own way!

IMHO people don’t get their Resolutions because they THINK they are supposed to write things that everyone else writes. Do yourself a favor, DON’T make “lose weight” one of your Resolutions. Your brain can’t even deal with that one. Here — BREATHE OUT. Ok, you’ve lost weight. Oops, you breathed in. Gained it back…

Think about what you REALLY want. You really want to feel better – yes? About you. About the way you look. Maybe about your energy level. So make a Resolution — a Roadmap — that says what you really want. And give yourself permission to want that. Don’t judge it. And if you think other people might laugh at you or diminish your Resolution, don’t tell them! Easy. Problem solved.

Mine was simple a few years ago. I said, “I want to look in the mirror one year from today and love what I see.” Then I set about doing things that would make THAT come true. If you want to look sexier, say that! Don’t say “I want to lose weight.” You could get sexier by getting more toned, even if you don’t lose an ounce.

The idea here is to set yourself up for success. That’s actually one of the secrets to Resilience. Seeing the fruits of your labor, feeling rewarded for those efforts — that sets you up to keep succeeding. That’s why it’s important to make your changes incremental and celebrate each little success. (Not with hot fudge sundaes if you are trying to improve your body, but at least a pat on the back!)

The next time you declare that you want something, pay attention. Do you immediately pull back on the idea, criticize yourself, or say something like “That ain’t gonna happen.“  If you do, you are asking and taking back in one breath. That’s like writing a message to someone and deleting it just as you hit “send.”

Take baby steps. Write 3 things you want. Put them somewhere you can see them often. And every time you see the list, say to yourself, “I give myself permission to want that. I accept it when it comes.”

You are worth it. When you succeed, the rest of us are better off. And you are better off when WE succeed. It all goes together.

What do YOU want to have happen? Write to me…

Blessings,

Beth

Beth, when I’m 89, I want to be able to get out of my own chair, drive my own car, understand what my grandchildren are talking about and be fully engaged in life. To act that way then, I have to establish the framework for that life now.

This blog helps me think about the conversations I must have with myself to insure those results. I will work on the physical and emotional habits–weight bearing exercises and yoga; keeping an open mind and challenging my own perceptions & opinions; staying in touch with current culture–a bit everyday. When I’m 89, I’m gonna rock…and not in a chair. And I think my goal will make my life between now and then all the richer!

Mimi – I love that – “I’m gonna rock, and not in a chair!” Thanks for that. good one. With all the information we have now, more and more of us should be very healthy all the way up to our 90′s and beyond. So much of it IS attitude and perspective. I need less now, and I’m simplifying so many things. Blogging like we are all doing for the blogathon helps me focus on what I want and how I’m getting in my own way, also.
