Why we will be better off … eventually

March 20, 2009

I realized this morning how much smarter I am now about my business and my life. This insanity has forced me to pay much closer attention than I ever have. I’m having to dig deeper into my inner resources, and I’m looking up and around more to see how I can be a solid and motivating resource for others.

If you are like me, you’ve spent money on things that didn’t matter. You’ve squandered your time and energy on petty upsets and silly distractions. Now we have to pay attention. We have to know where each dime goes, and is it a wise choice? We have to wake up each morning dedicated to solving the challenges and savoring each day.

More than anything, this whole economic crisis has been a clarion call to wake up. Wake up to the fact that we humans are all intricately connected. Wake up to the fact that each decision we make, and each breath we take, all have consequences and and impact elsewhere. Many of us live as if we are independent islands, or as if our little tribe or family units are.

We are inextricably linked, hand in checkbook, in this mess. No one is unscathed. And we all will be changed by it. It’s the reminder of what our parents and grandparents went through 80 years ago in the not-so-Great Depression. The lessons of frugality, of paying attention, of valuing the little things. Most importantly, the lesson of valuing the intangibles: life, health, friends, community, faith.

Are there predators out there? Yes, unfortunately. Some people just never learn. And they will be the poorer for not paying attention to the real lessons.

Meanwhile, work on yourself. Think of this as a strenuous workout that will reap rewards down the road. You are working on a greater goal. Pay attention to the things you can do to mitigate the mess. Find ways to create hope and solutions everywhere you go. Be willing to give up what you don’t need. Be willing to collaborate with and support others in this journey. Look outside your “tribe” and help us all be better off because you showed up.

All the best on your journey,

Beth
