Beijing Olympics and The Resilience of the Human Spirit
No matter the situation in the world; no matter the economy; the the looks on the faces of the Olympians as they march through the stadium tonight brings Hope. Not just hope, but a reminder of our commonality and community. A reminder that, in the end, we aren’t so different after all.
Without flags and identifying music, we’d be hard pressed to identify which country is which. Sure, we can see different cultural uniforms. We can see a variety of eye shapes, skin tones, and hair. But still, there isn’t much to identify the geographic and political boundaries.
What stands out for me, in spite of all the insanity in the world, is the electricity in their eyes.
Watch the parade with me. The childlike sense of wonder. Their unbridled excitement as they walk the circle, carrying cameras and videotaping us as we videotape them. Some from developing countries look completely in shock. Others can barely contain their happiness and delight.
And here comes the US. Our flag bearer is a refugee from the Sudan. Our ranks are multi-generational, multi-racial, a multitude of hair colors, heights, and weights. The common denominator? Eyes ablaze with hope, smiles, promise, and wonder.
Some of the flag bearers from other countries are funny – trying so hard to remain dignified and serious about this parade. You can see little smiles playing across their pursed lips as they take in an audience, in some cases, larger than their own country.
Who will win? We will. Not “We the USA,” but “We the human race.” You cannot help but remember we are all connected while you watch this parade of humanity.
Hah! I just realized that if we put the whole mess of them in Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and slippers… this group would look like the entire state of Hawaii got together and decided to start a parade.
These Olympic games started and were re-ignited to remind us who we are. Ultimately, no matter the battles for land and power, the Olympics remind us that we are, after all, in this together. Watch the games and have some Hope.
Cheers and Let the Games Begin!
