The Last Lecturer’s Final Farewell – Randy Pausch
One of the bright lights, Randy Pausch, has finally left the building. He discovered he had pancreatic cancer last September. Instead of throwing a pity party, he got busy. Within days, he created a lecture about life, joy, love, happiness, having fun, and living with purpose. That speech on YouTube has been seen by millions. I’ve received it from friends about a dozen times. His book has stayed on the top of booklists ever since it came out in April.
From my perch as a fellow speaker, it’s interesting to listen to his words. I especially resonated with this comment: “Under the ruse of giving an academic lecture, I was trying to put myself in a bottle that would one day wash up on the beach for my children.”
Many a speaker and author can relate to that. I wrote my book “Walking in a Crowd of Angels” in honor of my four step daughters. I wanted that love story to be forever encased somewhere, so when they were grown and had kids of their own, they might find ways to make sense of their history, remember who we were as a family, and find a nugget or two that would make their lives better.
It’s beautiful that Randy Pausch chose to share his story with all of us. If you haven’t listened to the YouTube version of his speech, take the time this weekend. It will lift your spirits and help you remember who you are.
To your happiness,
Beth
