Tax Day and the Titanic

April 15, 2008
by Beth Terry

The British Luxury Liner Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic 96 years ago today. You ever wonder if those crazy kids who created April 15 as our tax deadline had a quirky sense of humor in their choice of the date? Or is that too much to ask of politicians and accountants…

Consider the similarities:

  • You’re cruising along, sipping a tall cool one, thinking you’ll actually make a little money this year, and BOOM! There’s a capital gains iceberg. OH NO, we have to dip into the reserves (if there ARE any!)
  • You’ve planned, plotted, and thought you had a bullet – proof – sink – proof business plan, and BOOM! One of your major customers goes bankrupt. Arggggh! No money to pay the taxman!
  • You were partying, living, working, stretching your wings, and you didn’t look up long enough to see the April 15 iceberg approaching, and BOOM! You don’t even have time to read this today!

Like I said yesterday, file an extension. Even if you don’t have enough money to pay your estimated taxes today, send something in with the extension to show good faith. Yep, they’ll charge you interest and penalties. And you’ll live through it.

Just remember, in 200 years we’ll ALL be dead. That paperwork on your desk will be dust. The IRS will be under water from melting ice floes, and we’ll all be floating on a cloud wondering what the big deal was. So, Chill… ;-D

Take care,

Beth
