Making Life Easier at Work: Be A Team Player

November 28, 2007

Being a Team Player is all about Self Preservation! You go to work and act like you’re part of the team; other people see you doing that and feel safe around you. When they feel safe, they help you. When you see them helping you, you feel safe around them. It creates trust! It’s all good.

We spend so much of our life with these cubicle mates – we may as well get along with them. It just makes life so much easier.

To me it’s like dancing The Electric Slide. You might not be all that good at it, but if you all pay attention and start moving in the same direction to the same beat, you’ll feel the synergy developing in the room.

Team projects are like that. some people are good at one thing and not so good at another. In some cases you might be the lead dog, in other cases, you might be following. We all can learn a few ‘steps’ from each other.

I notice when we dance The Electric Slide how helpful people are with each other. “Here, just follow me.” It happens all the time on the dance floor with many different group dances. Why can’t we be that way at work?

If you are frustrated with a project, look around to see who might know this “dance” and might be willing to help you. When you see someone struggling with a project that’s easy for you, gently offer your assistance. Let them know that you believe you’re all on the same side… if you are working for the same company – YOU ARE.

I’ve noticed that healthy companies have an attitude of “We’re all in this together.” And healthy companies aren’t just started at the top. Do your part to bring a team attitude to work. If you take care of the team, the team is more likely to take care of you.
