One of a Kind Pet Rescue Collaboration: Model For Other States

October 22, 2007

All over the country, hundreds of thousands of healthy animals are euthanized every year. Meanwhile, “puppy and kitten farms” churn out new cute little critters that become grown up dogs and cats — too hard for some people to handle.

Some animals, once they are no longer cute, are tossed onto the street or worse. The cycle is never ending in every city across the US. Organizations struggle to make a dent: urging spaying and neutering, fighting illegal breeding farms, rescuing endangered animals. It’s a daunting task.

The Phoenix Animal Care Coalition (PACC911) has united most of the animal welfare organizations throughout Maricopa County. Now all the groups have more opportunities to work together to care for animals in need. PACC911 coordinates adoption events, fundraising, education, low-cost spaying and neutering, and medical assistance for all groups. By combining efforts, they help insure a greater percentage of monies raised go for the animal welfare. Now,with their help, a greater number of animals are rescued and placed in new homes.

PACC911 has also created an emergency medical fund, so when rescued animals need immediate care, they get it. Before PACC911 was formed, animal welfare groups found themselves competing for the same support. Meanwhile, 60,000 animals a year were being put to death in the Greater Phoenix Area and Maricopa County.

This all is the brainchild of Bari Mears. Her visionary efforts created a spirit of cooperation and education in central Arizona’s animal community. And to Bari’s credit, her vision has flowered and blossomed in the desert. Here’s the rest of the story…

How you can help: Donate to the PACC911 Fund, volunteer your time if you are in Phoenix. If you live outside the state, tell your animal welfare groups about the coalition here in Phoenix and suggest it as a model for your area.

You may have heard about the World’s Biggest Blog Party. For the next few weeks, I will be blogging at least once a week about PACC911 with stories of their amazing rescues and successes.

Ghandi said it best:

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress

can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Patsy – thanks for the vote of confidence for the shelters. A lot of people just don’t realize how many quality and loving pets there are just waiting to be loved. Glad you found Salty!

    Dear Beth,

How right you are on animals and pet rescues. Hooray for PACC911!

I lost my Heeler a year ago last July. I knew I wanted another pet. I decided this time for a schnauzer, but since I was working, a puppy not a viable option. I decided I would adopt one from a rescue. Well after a few months of searching I found a boy schnauzer at the Indio Animal shelter. He was all scruffy and had tons of matted hair. My heart showed me his potential. It was a truly a meant to be situation. I call him Salty, as he has beautiful silver blue coloring. (My sister has a black cocker spaniel named Pepper). A trip to the Vet and groomer confirmed I was right. This was a match made in heaven. He is a healthy, handsome lively little fellow and a perfect addition to our family. I love him so very much.

That being said, I heartily endorse pet adoptions from rescues and shelters. Yes, I agree, the first thing was to have him nuetered. Bless all those who so lovingly care for the furry cast offs. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t have found my Salty. In the few short weeks I have had him, he has brought back a lot of love to me.

    Bravo, Bari!
