Synchronicity. It all comes together: Sunday Musings

September 30, 2007

Looking back across five decades, the synchronicity of life comes into full focus. On a small, short-term scale, events seem to have one meaning. Through the lens of decades, the necessity for that trauma, this drama, this experience, the heart-wrenching decisions, all comes clear.

I think about my career. I was accused often of not being able to hold down a job. It made perfect sense to me: I’m a problem solver. I show up, fix a company’s problem, and when I’m done, I’m done. Time to move on. It was fun and challenging. I learned a lot.

Years later I find out that’s called a consultant!

I threw myself into each job: tour guide at Hearst Castle; insurance sales; office manager for a Personnel company; office manager for a Training company; Manager at a Retail store; Admin VP for a Real Estate Company; National manager for a Real Estate Property owner. All this until I finally got smart and started doing training and speaking full time.

But what great on-the-job training I had. I “get” what sales people go through. I know how challenging retail is. I know the real estate business from several angles. And from both Hearst Castle and living in Hawaii, I understand tourism.

When it came time to put training programs together, I didn’t need to look in a book. I had the experience and the contacts. I could interview people with more time in than me, and I could use my own experiences as reference.

So what about you? Are you beating yourself up for the circumstances of your life? Can you find ways for that experience to be valuable? What’s the lesson? What’s the application? How can you turn it from a difficulty into an asset? How can you utilize all the things you learned from those small-time jobs and those landmines along the way? How can you become better because you have walked that road? Who can you help because you’ve been there?

Synchronicity- It’s all about finding the connections between what was and what is.

Make it a good week. Give yourself credit for the experiences you’ve had. And go out and make it better for someone else.

Cheers,
Beth
