Music that makes your heart sing…Sunday Musings

September 9, 2007

I read an article long ago that said each of us has ‘tones’ that resonate with us, and not necessarily with others. The tones might be related to what we heard as we were carried around in our mother’s womb. Or they could be related to warm and wonderful events during our childhood.

Each of us is hardwired with our mother’s nervous system. So it’s possible that the tones are related to her voice. Whatever the reason, some music soothes you and some grates. And just because ‘science’ says that this music should help you study and this music should help you relax, doesn’t make it true for everyone.

I remember the author’s recommendation was to figure out what music soothes you. Pay attention every time you hear a song that makes you stop and breathe deeply. Create a collection of those songs onto your favorite medium (CD, iPod, MP3) and when you’re stressed, play your collection. Do the same for music that rocks your world. When you need an uplift, play that.

I’ve been doing this since I read about it. Just before I go on stage, I play my ‘rock your world’ music and get pumped up for the presentation. When traveling, the soothing music comes out.

Music has an amazing ability to shift our moods. Pay attention to how it affects you and use it. With all the cool tools we have out there these days, there’s no excuse not to.

And now – here’s a link to a YouTube video that rocks my world. It’s a crossover tune from Los Lonely Boys.

Enjoy,
and have a great week!
